💡 Mulch Tips

  • • Apply 2-4 inches for best weed suppression
  • • Keep mulch 6 inches away from tree trunks
  • • Wood mulch breaks down; refresh yearly
  • • Pine straw lasts longer but is acidic
  • • 1 cubic yard = ~13.5 bags (2 cu ft each)

How it works

Formula
Cubic Yards = (Area × Depth in inches) / 324

Cubic Feet = (Area × Depth in inches) / 12

Bags Needed = Cubic Yards / 0.33 (for 2 cu ft bags)

Mulch Density:
Wood Chips: 1.4 lbs/cubic foot
Bark Mulch: 1.6 lbs/cubic foot
Pine Straw: 0.8 lbs/cubic foot

Example:
500 sq ft at 3" depth
Cubic Yards = (500 × 3) / 324 = 4.63 yards
Bags = 4.63 / 0.33 = 14 bags

The mulch calculator estimates the volume of mulch needed for landscaping projects. Enter garden area and desired depth to calculate cubic yards, cubic feet, and number of bags required. Supports multiple mulch types with different densities and durability.

Why this matters

Accurate mulch estimates prevent under-ordering (insufficient coverage) or over-ordering (wasted money). Proper mulch depth (2-4 inches) suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and regulates soil temperature. Different mulch types have varying costs and longevity.
